About John William Mathers

Thursday, 27 Jul 1961 St. Joe paper read:

J. W. Mathers, Native of Faucett, Dies at 103

J. W. Mathers, 103, known as Uncle Bill, died last night at the home of his niece, Mrs. Maude Krumme, 1023 Church street, following an illness of several weeks.

Born on a farm near Faucett MO, Mr. Mathers had made his home there until coming to St. Joseph in 1950. His birthdate was April 26, 1858.

On his 97th birthday, he was interviewed and he told of his first visit to St. Joseph. He said that when he came here for the first time there were no business houses east of Market Square.

He recalled one moment in his life that he would like to forget and that was when Quantrell's raiders came to his farm home following the Civil War.

His father had been a captain in the militia and had skirmished with Quantrell in the closing days of the war. On a Sunday morning, the raiders rode into the farmyard and asked for his father, who was in St. Joseph. Mr. Mathers was happy when they rode off, he said.

On his 100th birthday, he attributed his long life to clean living and eating the right kind of food.

A member of the Faucett Baptist Church, he also was a charter member of the Woodmen of the World.

Of all the things which he enjoyed, he said that sporting events of any nature was his favorites. In recent years, he had relaxed while watching baseball games and boxing matches on television. Prior to television, he had been an ardent radio fan.

Mr. Mathers is survived by several other nieces and nephews; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
