OBIT: November 9, 1899 - JOHN MATLOCK - At the home of his son, Jerome Matlock, Nov. 2, 1899, in Cold Spring township, John Matlock, aged 90 years, 9 months, and 2 days. He was born in Washington county, Tenn., Jan 31, 1809, and was married in his 17th year to Malinda Ellis. To this union 13 children were born, 6 boys and 7 girls, 5 of whom are still living..H.B. Matlock, Norman, Oklahoma, Jerome Matlock of East Cold Springs, Mrs. George Dewey and Mrs. J.C. Seaton of Meramec township, and Mrs. H.B. Adams of Dillon. He served as justice of the peace 18 years when this was part of Crawford county, and was Presiding Judge of the County Court when this county was formed. He moved to this county when quite young and resided here till his death. He was a life-long democrat and never scratched his ticket. His father, Isom Matlock died at the age of 93. Uncle John, as he was familiarly called, was the oldest child of the family and was the last to be summoned to his Maker He was a strong believer in a Supreme Being, and a few days before his death was asked by his son if he wanted anything he said: "Yes, I want to go to Heaven." He was buried at the Matlock Cemetery Saturday, Nov. 4, 1899. He was buried at the Matlock cemetery, on the farm of Jos. Simily, Saturday, Nov. 4th 1899.
Another obit from Rolla area newspaper: Died at the home of his son, Jerome Matlock on Thursday, Nov. 2, 1899, John Matlock, Sr. of East Cold Spring township, age 90 years. He was born in Washington Co., Tennessee, in the year 1809. At the age of 17 he married Matilda (should be Malinda) Ellis. and to the union was born thirteen children, of which five are living --H.B. Matlock, Norman, Oklahoma, Jerome Matlock of East Cold Springs, Mrs. George Dewey and Mrs. J.C. Seaton of Meramec township, and Mrs. H.B. Adams of Dillon. Mr. Matlock was one of Missouri's early settlers, and was a justice of the peace when this county was a part of Crawford. He one time served the people of Phelps county as presiding judge and made one of the best officers the county has ever had. He was resigned to his God, and his last words were "I am ready". His beloved wife departed this life last spring. They were of the best people of this county. The funeral took place last Saturday from the residence of his son, and the remains were laid to rest beside those of his helpmate in the Matlock Cemetery.
Melba Wood: Melinda said both her parents were born in Tennessee. Melinda remains a mystery. Her father could be,James ELLIS,son of William ELLIS and Elizabeth GRESHAM,dau of Thomas GRESHAM and Dorcus LANE dau of John Fuller LANE, [son of Richard LANE and Sarah May FULLER] and Elizabeth CLOUD, [dau. of Isaac Cloud] . I (Melba) suspect this because of association, locality and family marriages. James and Betsy ELLIS had a large family, 13 or 14 children with only three sons. None of Melinda's family came to Missouri. Or could Melinda belong to John ELLIS and Elizabeth BEAN ???
Melinda Ellis Matlock was very old, sitting on a chair by the kitchen door in her little bonnet, as remembered by my mother, Opal Gahr DUCKLES, when she was four years old at her Grandmother Endimile Matlock Dean ADAM's home. Great Grandma Dean had light blue eyes, was short and plump. She loved to hide things from her daughters and was quite a tease.
They emigrated to Crawford Co.,Mo. in 1839, and lived at Dillion, Mo. After the Civil War they crossed the river on the ice to Norman Creek area, 15 miles southeast of Rolla. In 1848 John MATLOCK was Justice of the Peace, was a member of the first Phelps Co., Court, Nov 1857. They spent the last years of their lives on the Simily farm, where they are buried in unmarked graves in the Simily Cemetery.* Updated from RootsWeb's WorldConnect via daughter Ada Endamile Matlock by SmartCopy: Jan 12 2015, 3:35:14 UTC
