About John Megie, Sr.

http://records.ancestry.com/Anna_records.ashx?pid=23805472

John was born in Balmaghie, Kirkcudbright, Scotland.

Contributed by Sandra Weber (#46895136). Inscription: Aged 76 years Since it so plainly doth Appear, We were not made for to stay here, But that we all must goe this way, Let us prepare without Delay.

Buried #1225 at First Pres. Cem., Elizabeth, NJ. He was probably born in southwest Scotland, possibly near Balmaghie or Castle Douglas. No records have been found regarding his parents or siblings. The Privy Council Proceedings of 1684 and 1685 list a John McGhie, whose name is spelled four different ways, and this is likely our ancestor. The Proceedings of August 1685 state that John is banished to the Jersey Plantations (NJ) for not taking the Oath of Allegiance to the Church of England, presumably due to his

Presbyterian beliefs. Before being deported, John and 166 other prisoners were

held at Dunnottar Castle (a few miles south of Stonehaven, Scotland) in

sub-human conditions in a stone vault under the castle. The hardships there of

John McGhie and the other prisoners is discussed in the "The Black Book of

Kincardineshire," printed in 1879. The prisoners were then marched in chains to

Leith, Scotland and there deported on September 5, 1685. Many died during the

voyage, including the captain, and the ship arrived in Perth Amboy, NJ, in

mid-December 1685, aboard the Henry & Francis. Little is known about John

McGhie from 1685 to 1699, when he was admitted as a an Elizabethtown Associate

(Elizabeth, NJ). John married Anna UNKNOWN.

The gravestone of both John & his wife Anna reads:

Since it so plainly doth Appear

We ware not made for to stay here

But that we all must goe this way

Let us prepair without Delay.
