MEMORIAL PHOTOS 2 FLOWERS 2 Obituary taken from Council Grove Republican, December 26, 1951.
John G., son of William and Christina Mitchell, was born on a farm near Wilsey, Kansas, February 18, 1872, and departed this life at his home near Parkerville, Kansas, Wednesday, December 12, 1951, at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 24 days. His boyhood was spent near Wilsey, and he attended school at the old Central School. During his young manhood, he was converted and joined the Neosho Valley Union Baptist Church, transferring his membership to the Parkerville Union Baptist Church when the former ceased to exist. He was united in marriage to Gertrude R. Hallmark on February 16, 1898. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Chas. Strom, and one son, P.M. Mitchell. Nearly his entire life, with the exception of three years spent in Thomas County, Kansas has been spent in Morris County. Although he has had poor health for may years and began to fail rapidly about four months ago, he was bedfast only three days. His love for his family was outstanding and he took great pleasure in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a cheerful word for everyone and had a large circle of friends and will be greatly missed. He leaves to mourn his departure; his wife, tow children, 5 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren, also one sister, Mrs. Lydia Gillet of Rockford, Illinois; and three brothers: Wes Mitchell of Phoenix, Arizona, Andrew Mitchell of Anderson, Missouri, and Edd Mitchell of Rockford, Illinois; many other relatives and a host of friends.
We looked at Dad as he peacefully lay, like he was taking his rest at the close of the day, and we weren't sorry that his troubles were gone, but sorry for us that labor on. He paid the debt we all must pay, it may be tomorrow, but it might be today, so let us not grieve though many tears we may shed, rather grieve for the living but not for the dead. He lay like a soldier, enjoying his sleep, let us dry out eyes, for he doesn't want us to week, let us not say "Goodbye" for I believe it is wrong, let us say, "Dear Dad," though it hurts, "So Long."
Funeral services were held at Parkerville on Sunday afternoon, December 16, with the Rev. Frank Parker officiating. Mrs. Edna Kendall and Mrs. G.E. Smith sang, with Mrs. Glancy as accompanist. Pallbearers were Floyd Shaw, Hugh Burton, Bernice Burton, Marion Parker, Howard Ingmire, Ed Lee Hirt. Interment was in the Parkerville Cemetery.
Card of Thanks: We wish to express our sincere thanks to our relatives, friends and neighbors for the flowers, cards and acts of kindness during our recent bereavement. Mrs. John Mitchell, Children and Grandchildren.
