John Mitchell

John Mitchell and his wife Mary, both aged 48, arrived on the "Gertrude" on 3 November 1841 with their family. and were among the earliest settlers on that part of the Porirua Road that is now Tawa Flat. The family comprise Elizabeth (aged 22), who married Eli Allen (Section 50); William (aged 20) who lived in Wellington, being known as "Tiger" Mitchell; James (aged 18), who purchased portion of Section 41, living there in the 1850s, and later returning to Tawa Flat in 1873-77, and living in Bartlett's house (Section 44); John (aged 16), who died in 1842; Joseph (aged 14), who died on 29 December 1868; and Henry (aged 8), died 19 February 1913
