About John Trevelyan Mitchell

John Trevelyn died by drowning in a dam on the Rushworth Road, Toolamba West. He, his brothers, and a mate were cooling off in the dam early afternoon on a December day after helping their father on the farm. They were probably hot and dusty. None of them were strong swimmers, and all say they advised young John to be careful because the dam was 10 to 12 feet deep. The inquest concluded that John got chilled in the cold water and cramped. He drowned before his brothers could come to his aid. Police recovered his body with difficulty. He was 3 weeks short of his 15th birthday.

Inquest 3 Dec 1898, Toolamba West. The foregoing depositions of Thomas Pearce Mitchell, William Clarke Mitchell, John Webb, Thomas Henry Mitchell and Constable Cornelius Kroon, Cornelius Franciscus 4551, were taken and sworn before me the 3rd Dec 1898 at Toolamba West. C W Wilson JP.

Conclusion: JohnTrevelyan Mitchell died by accidental drowning at Toolamba West 2 Dec 1898.

Thomas Pearce Mitchell and I are assisting my father on his farm. I have viewed the body of my brother John Trevelyan Mitchell whom I recognise as having been drowned at a dam on the Rushworth Road on the 2nd December 1898 at about half past 1 o'clock. Between 1 and 2 o'clock my brother William Clarke Mitchell and the deceased and I all went into the damm to have a bathe. I swam across the dam and back again, and was on the bank resting when I saw the deceased struggling in the water hand thrown up over his head, he then disappeared. I then jumped into the water to attempt to save him, etc.
