About John Leese Moses
He lived and died in Knoxville, Tennessee. Early life spent in New England Exeter, NH. A graduate of Waterville College, now Colby University at Waterville, Maine, a Baptist college. Received degree of A.B. in 1841. Went to Knoxville in 1841 to engage in editing brother’s paper, Knoxville, Register. He built a house near Knoxville in 1847. During the Civil War he was a Union man.Home was burned by soldiers of the Northern Army. Sent his family consisting of John, Thomas, Leese, Edward, James, Mary and wife, Susan to his old home in Exeter, as refugees of the war, 1863. They returned in 1868, day after Christmas. He became President of the Board of Trustees of the University of Tennissee, was Secretary Treasurer and Superintendent of the Knoxville and Kentucky R.R., now the Southern R.R. He was a Mason.
