About John Hubbard Nims

Birth: 1821 Death: Nov., 1907 Jefferson County New York, USA

Nims John H 1821 1907

The death of John Hubbard Nims occurred at his home in Market street on Wednesday last week, having reached within less than a month the advanced age of 87 years. John Hubbard Nims was born at Fort Ann, N Y., in 1822 and was the son of Samuel and Sophia Hubbard Nims. He was a descendant of Geoffrey Nims, who fell a victim to the Indians at the Deerfield massacre in Massachusetts, when that little town was burned and its citizens murdered or carried away captives. Only three of the Nims family escaped death, two boys and a little girl, who were taken by the Indians into Canada. The boys made their escape and travelled many days through an unbroken forest, subsisting upon such food as the wilderness furnished, When finally they reached Deerfield, nothing but the ashes of their home remained and their parents and other members of the family were among the victims of the tomahawk, From these two sons all the Nims families trace their geneaology. The home that was rebuilt in Deerfield by these returned captives is still an old land mark and is called the Nims home. Mr. Nims came to Cape Vincent when less than two years of age and was reared by his grandmother and aunt, Emily Hubbard, who were among the pioneers of this then new country. His grandfather, Samuel Hubbard, was a soldier in the revolutionary war, so that on both sides he is descended from families who figured in the early history of this country. John Hubbard Nims was a man of strong convictions and a firm and unwavering exponent of principle and right living. A man of muoh more than ordinary ability, he was able to quickly arrive at just conclusions and to hold to them. A deeply religious man, and yet practical in things spiritual as well as temporal. His conscience was his guide. He thought for himself. To him his Creator was the friend and counsellor, whose nearness was a comfort and a joy. Besides his wife, who during his sickness was most devoted and patient, he is survived by two sons, William H., of Watertown, and Charles W., of Chaumont, and two daughters, Mrs. Smith Mott and Mrs. Annette Nims Williams, of Coleman, Mich
