About John Peadie, Skinner, Bailie of Glasgow

JOHN PEADIE

Skinner in Glasgow; Burgess and Guild Brother of Glasgow; Deakin of the Skinners; Deacon Convenor of Glasgow; Bailie of Glasgow

His Last Will and Testament

John Peadie made his last will and testament at Glasgow on 1 October 1631. He nominated his wife Marie Muir to be his only executor and universal intromitter with his goods and gear. He also nominated and appointed his brother, James Peadie, skinner in Glasgow, and his eldest son, also James Peadie, to be tutors testamentar to John Peadie, Marion Peadie and Bessie Peadie: "his thrie bairnes procreat betwixt mim & the said Marie Muir". He left an annuity to his eldest daughter Janet Peadie: "the yeirlie proffeit of ane thousand punds mony during her wedowhead". In the event of her marrying for a second time she was to receive five hundred merks from the principal sum and the remainder was to be given to two of her sons (identified as John Peadie's oyes), three hundred merks to Robert Hunter, and seven hundred merks to William Hunter. In the event of their death the money was to be divided equally between Bessie Peadie and Jonet Peadie, his youngest daughters. Confirmation was granted to Marie Muir on 21 February 1632. Death

John Peadie, Skinner in Glasgow, died in October 1631. [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Commissary Court, Testament Testamentar of John Padie Baillie of Glasgow, reference CC9/7/25]

First Marriage

John Peadie, here treated, married Janet Spreull. [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Commissary Court, Testament Testamentar and Inventory of Jonet Spreull spouse to Johnne Padie, skynner burges of Glasgow, reference CC9/7/10] There is no record of the marriage, records before 1622 have not survived, but their eldest child, Janet Peadie, was probably no younger than sixteen years of age when she married William Hunter in 1622, and if this was the case then she would have been born before 1608. Possibly, therefore, John Peadie and Janet Spreull were married in or before about 1607. Janet Spreull died in October 1614. [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Commissary Court, Testament Testamentar and Inventory of Jonet Spreull spouse to Johnne Padie, skynner burges of Glasgw, reference CC9/7/10]

Janet Spreull's Last Will and Testament

Janet Spreull made her last will and testament at Glasgow on 14 September 1614. She nominated John Peadie, her husband, to be her only executor and intromitter with her goods and gear. Patrick Bar, skinner in Glasgow, [Note 1] and George Pollock, younger, [Note 2] were nominated as tutors to her children. She left all her personal clothing, together with one hundred merks money, to her daughter Janet Peadie. It was her wish that the remainder of her free gear should be divided equally between her five children, including Janet, viz. John Peadie, William Peadie, James Peadie, Thomas Peadie, and Janet Peadie. Her husband John Peadie gave up the inventory of their moveable property and Gabriel Cunningham, merchant in Glasgow, acted himself as cautioner for him. Confirmation was granted on 24 January 1615.
