About John Peck

NOTE: It is not proved that Adam Peck was John's father.

Peck was a planter in the Dresden - Gleason (Weakley County) Tennessee area. He is found on the 1828 Weakley County Tax list with 400 acres, #1353, range 1, section 6, district 12, as one free polewith two slaves. He is also listed in 1829, 1830, 1831, and 1832 with 402 acres. The 1840 Tennessee Census for Weakley County lists John Peck (page 267) with one male 40-50 years of age, one female 40-50, one female less than 5, and two females 5-10.

John Peck wrote his will 24 July 1843 and listed his assets as 1068 acres of land in Weakley County, TN "where I now live", a piece of ground 35 1/2 feet on Cherry Street in the town of Nashville, 1/4 of a piece of land with a Brick house on Market Street in Nashville, the "McIntosh Property", 14 slaves, 16 horses and mules, 58 cattle, sheep, hogs, tools, furniture, $3,000 cash, other claims and debts of $25. He named three daughters, Temperance Amanda, Sarah Caroline, and Delia Elizabeth and made Epraim H. Foster of Nashville his Executor and Guardian of the children. The will was proven in 1852 in Weakley County Court.

In one of the WEAKLEY REMEMBERED books, there is another abstract of John Peck's will: Weakley Co. TN Record and Will Book B 1840-1861 p.320-322.. John Peck 24 July 1843.. Property on Cherry Street and Market Street, formerly known as the McIntosh property, both in Nashville; Money owed from Samuel Elam and Thos. Claiborne, on record at Davidson Co., Circuit Court; Money owed from Enoch Wilborn, (note) in hands of W.L (William Lytle?). and R.C. (I guess Robert Coleman) Foster; mentions graveyard where wife, son and daughter are buried' Daus. Temperance Amanda, Sarah Caroline and Delia Elizabeth; Ephriam H. Foster of Nashville, no relationship given, appointed guardian for children' Exec. Ephraim H. Foster' No wit. given Recorded Jan. Term 1852; Slaves Sip, Wilson, Milly, Mary, Sally, Alfred, Mariah, Anthony, Isam, and Adaline and her four children Ann, Green, Jane, and Willie.

Ephraim Hubbard Foster (1794-1854) was born in Kentucky. He was a member of Tennessee state legislature; U.S. Senator from Tennessee, 1837-39, 1843-45. He is buried at City Cemetery, Nashville, Tenn.

Peck was robbed and killed by two of his slaves who were hanged for the crime. I did find in Goodspeed's HISTORY OF WEAKLEY CO. , "The persons that have been hanged in the county by the sanction of the law were Anthony and Alfred, two slaves, who murdered their master, John Peck. They were hanged June 18, 1853." In this same history there is a bio on J. G. Thomason and wife Sara C. Peck (his dau).

There was a land dealing in Davidson Co. Tn (Nashville) between John Peck and Adam Peck. Also, another researcher had written a note that in researching the family, she thought Adam Peck might possibly be the father of John Peck.... Given this land dealing... they would have been kinsmen... brothers, Father-son, etc... Researchin this possibility I found an older John Peck, brother of and Adam as follows:

John Peck, born 1750; died 1820. John Peck m. 1777, Mary Hickle, a daughter of Lewis Hickle, of Botetourt County, VA. John Peck served as surveyor and ensign during the American Revolution (A.W. Reddy's SOLDIERS OF WESTERN VIRGINIA) He was appointed a lieutenant of militia March 16, 1787, and took the oath as captain on Sept. 13, 1791. He was an enterprising and successful man. Numerous references to him appear in Summers' Annals. He was taxed in 1782, the first years for which tax lists are extant, on 375 acres of land, and later increased his holdings. His will, dated August 15, 1820, was proved in Botetourt County Court of Setpember 1820 (Will Book C. p. 279). The Hickle family was among the early settlers of the lower valley of Virginia. Lewis Hickle was a Revolutionary soldier and is said to have been at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered. His will, dated Nov. 21, 1807, was proved in January 1808 (Botetourt County Will Book B., p. 167). The testators names sons John, Jacob, Adam and George and daughters Mary Peck, Susannah Stipp and Elizabeth Harman." and about his brother: Adam Peck, born February 13, 1753 in Sharpsburg, Frederick Co., Md.; died February 13, 1817 in Mossy Creek, Jefferson Co., Tn; married Elizabeth Sharkey June 29, 1777 in Botecourt County, Virginia.

É possivel que John Peck fosse filho de Adam Peck e Elizabeth Sharkey.

The Hollowell Papers describe the Pecks as "a proeminent Nashville family..." moved to a farm between Clarksville and Paris.

Some family papers say John Back died 60 Y O

He is not on 1830 Census.
