John was the Clerk of the Exchequer for Queen Elizabeth I. He was married to Joan Swayne, daughter of John Swayne of Blandford Forum, Dorset, England.

John and Joan's third son, Thomas, was the Great Grandfather of William Pitt "The Elder", 1st Earl of Chatham & Prime Minister of Great Britain and the Great Great Grandfather of William Pitt "The Younger", Earl of Chatham & Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1783 to 1801 and again from 1804 to 1806. He also played a dominant part in British politics during the interval between the two terms. At age 24, he was and still is the youngest Prime Minister in British history.
