John Remsen Rappleye, son of Jeremiah Rappleye and Sarah Williamson, was born 24 August 1783 in Penn's Neck, Middlesex County, New Jersey. He was baptized on 29 January 1784 at the Harlingen Church in Harlingen, Somerset County, New Jersey. He married Margaret Tillier, daughter of John Tillier and Dinah Sortore, circa 1806. He began military service in 1812 in Ovid, Seneca County, New York; in the New York Militia.
John enlisted in Captain Jonas Cleland's Company, 18th Regiment commanded by Colonel H.W. Dobbin and was transferred to Captain Jehial Moor's Company in that Regiment. He marched from Ovid, Seneca County, New York to Niagara, later crossed into Canada and was in the Battle of Queenston on 13 October 1812. During that engagement he received a severe wound in his right arm which disabled his hand, a second wound in his right side near the spine and a third wound in the bone of his left hip which completely disabled "the whole limb". It was stated that he was carried from the field in critical condition and was confined to a hospital in Lewiston; He was taken home in a sleigh in January 1813.
He received a military pension as of 2 September 1814 in Ovid, Seneca County, New York; for service as a private in the New York Militia during the War of 1812 of $5/Month. He received a military pension as of 24 April 1816; increase to $8.00 per month. His wife, Margaret Rappleye, died on 18 September 1855 in Tyrone Township, Steuben County, New York. He died on 17 January 1864 in Tyrone Township, Schuyler County, New York.
