Ray, John Alexander (son of John Ray, born at Shelton, England, and Elizabeth Nuttall). Born in Mississippi in 1817. Came to Utah September 4, 1853, Moses Dailey company. Married Mary Wingo Young 1841 in North Carolina (daughter of William Calvin Young, major general Mexican war, and Mary Hayes, pioneers Whitmore McIntire, Johnson and McCullah company). She was born in North Carolina in 1820 and died April 20, 1890. Their children: Ellen Barton, married John Vickers; Martha Jane, married Sims Matheny; Hester, married W. W. Dameron; Mary Virginia, married Orson Holbrook; William Alexander, married Minerva Hinckley; Joseph Edward, married Mary Emily Warner; Alice Jerome, married Nephi Pratt; Melissa Hayes, married W. S. Smith; John A., died; Eleanor, married Alonzo Huntsman; Ann Wingo, died. Family home Fillmore, Utah.
Settled at Fillmore, Utah, early in 1854. First government Indian agent in that section, receiving his appointment 1858; also first probate judge; member territorial legislature. Missionary to England, where he was associate editor of the "Millenial Star"; president Millard stake 4 years. Merchant; farmer. Died July 4, 1862.
