Census 1910 Brooklyn, Kings, NY [5]

In his household was his wife Elizabeth T., and his mother-in-law Elizabeth Corson. He was a watchman.

[It seems likely that this census entry is for the present John B. Raynor. He was reported as living in Brooklyn in both 1909 and 1912. There are no other John B. Raynors in Brooklyn. However, an analysis of the probate report for the estate of his sister Emily F. Raynor suggested that he would have had at least one son; the census entry recorded that his present wife Elizabeth had had no children. A possible explanation was that John had been previously married.]

Residence 1920 Bronx (Webb's Academy and Home for Shipbuilders), Bronx, NY [7, 8, 9]

at Sedgwich Ave. and 188th St.

Both John B. Raynor and his wife Elizabeth were recorded as residents in 1920. In 1930, Elizabeth was a resident, John was not.

William Henry Webb (19 June 1816-30 October 1899) was a 19th-century New York shipbuilder and philanthropist, who has been called America's first true naval architect. In 1894 he built the Webb Academy and Home for Shipbuilders, and provided an endowment for its running estimated at $2,000,000. The main purpose of the Academy was in the words of its charter to "furnish gratuitous education in the art, science and profession of shipbuilding". Tuition for the students, who were carefully selected on the basis of aptitude and lack of means, was free. The facility also provided a free home to old shipbuilders, including a number of Webb's own former employees. By 1899 the Academy was providing facilities to about 400 students and retirees. The Academy is known today as the Webb Institute. (
