John “Red” McNeil.

John McNeil, “Red,” (Iain Ruadh Mac Domhnaill Phiobaire) came to this country in 1817. His first wife was Mary, only daughter of Hector McKenzie (Eachun Mac’ Illeasbuig). She died in 1821 leaving a family of two sons and one daughter, viz., Neil (Red), Hector, and Mary.

His second wife was a McLean woman, sister of Neil McLean (Dubh), Baddeck. Issue: — Angus, Allan, Malcom, Rory, Donald, Michael, Katie, Lucy, and Bessie.

The following is a copy of a certificate which John McNeil, “Red,” received when he was leaving Barra: —
Parish of Barra, 5th May, 1817.
These do certify that the bearer, John McNeil, a native of this Parish, a married man, now intending to emigrate with his wife and family to America, behaved himself always with hone3ty, industry and sobriety; maintaining the character of a prudent, just, and sober man, giving satisfaction to his neighbours and well-wishers.”
“Given at Barra, place and date as above

By Ang. MacDonald, Missionary Ap. in Barra,” 

and Hugh McDonald, P. P.
Being short of a part of his passage money, he gave a note of hand as follows: —
£3.5s —
Brig Hope, Greenock Harbour, 30th May 1817.
Four months after sight, pay to G. Fraser, Esq., of Pictou, in Nova Scotia, or order within the office of the Attorney General of Cape Breton, the sum of three pounds five shillings, British sterling money, being the balance due of my passage money to Cape Breton with interest according to the law of Cape Breton from this time till paid.
