About John Redman
John Redman was a "Free Negro" taxable on 3 persons and 2 horses in Hardy County in 1810 [Yantis, A Supplement to the 1810 Census of Virginia, H-7]. At the age of sixty years on 11 June 1820, he made a declaration in Hardy County Court on 11 June 1820 to obtain a pension for his services in the Revolution. He stated that he enlisted in Winchester, Virginia.
His widow Sarah applied for a survivor's pension on 9 August 1838 stating that her husband died on 8 October 1836.
Their son Nimrod was fifty-one years old on 26 May 1849 when he appeared in Hardy County Court stating that he was the son of John and Sarah who died 4 November 1848 [M805-679, frame 0611].
