Notwithstanding his past history as a supporter of Richard II’s absolutist policies, Sir Richard seems to have encountered few problems in coming to terms with the new regime. Although he was removed from the shrievalty of Cumberland in September 1399, and later had to offer securities of £200, jointly with his brother John, as an earnest of their future good behaviour towards the archdeacon of Richmond, he did not otherwise suffer as a result of Bolingbroke’s coup d’état.
