A native of Tennessee, John Wesely Reed came to what later became McDowell Co. early in it's formation. The region had beens subject to conflict with the Shawnee ( see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Creek_Expedition#/media/File:Bi... ) and ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Creek_Expedition )
John's connection with those who dictated the seizure of land was probably quite significant as he and his children secured thousands of acres in various places.
John Reed was chosen as a magistrate for Tazewell County, VA
In 1880, part of his family was living close together in Sandy RIver, McDowell County. the group in cluded his wife, son, dau and inlaws and their children One was Sgt. Jesse Weber Bean (CSA) another was his son Amanuel Reed and his young family

after all, 2,400 acres would barely fit inside a square of 1.75 miles x 1.75 miles
In trying to find the parents of John Wesley Reed, (CSA) notice that there is a Miriam Reed (1802-1910) who married William Scaggs (1800-1886) This is particularly interesting in that their daughter,Sarah (1828-1886) married Aaron Altizer (1824-1923). Why is that interesting? Because John Wesley Reed's father-in-law, Thomas Bailey Christian was once married to an Altizer as well. Let us also recall that, among the 'famous' orphans, Rachel (Scaggs) Whitt ,"sister" of Thomas Bailey Christian, could be the adoptive sister or adoptive cousin of our above mentioned William Scaggs. One issue may separate Miriam from John. Miriam is said to have been born in Montgomery County, Virginia while John is said to have been born in Hancock TN, but these two places are not that far apart.
In looking for other <Reed> born in Hancock TN, there is an Enoch Reed, said to be a son of William who was married in Hancock TN (Jan 3, 1832) ~• source= ancestry dot com
another possible close relation would be: George D. Reed . George married a Scaggs
or.. a descendant of George William Reed, Sr.

John Reed's son-in-law, Jesse Weber Bean, who, incidentally wasn't that much younger then him, fought for the 36th VA (Logan's Wildcats?). perhaps Jiohn was with them as well. (?)
