On the 1881 census John and Emma were living at 24 Liverpool Road, Stoke on Trent where they had a fruiters shop. On the 1891 census John and Emma were living with their 4 children at 101 West Street (Westland Street). In 1914 John was living in Portland Street (Orial Street) Penkhull where he owned a fruit and coal business, which he left in his will to son Harold, providing Harold took over the mortgage.
