John Roper

1. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:

John Roper, (son of John Roper and Elizabeth Hallett) was b. 1728, Chideock, Dorset, England, bapt. 7 Oct 1728, Chideock. He m Edith Farwell, 7 Jun 1764, in Chideock, in the presence of Thomas Farwell and Thomas Lawrence (all signed). Edith Payne Forwell had been bapt. on 7 August, 1732 in Chideock, St. Giles church, a daughter of John Forwell and Anne Geare who had been married in Chideock on October 17th., 1731 (Phillimore). She died 4 Jan and was bur. 10 Jan 1799, aged 68, m.i. in Chideock. [The marriage of a John Roper, widower, to Ann Hockford, 7 Oct 1811, in Chideock, St.Giles, was probably in another family, as there is no Ann interred with John and Edith in their Chideock grave.] John and Edith lived in Chideock. In 1784, John was a farmer in Chideock. In the Dorset Poll Book of 1807, John Roper of Chideock, was registered as the owner / occupier of some land in Shipton Gorge. John died 11 Sep 1813, aged 85, and was buried 17 Sep 1813, m.i. in Chideock. John and Edith had issue.
