John Eugene Rowell, 84, of Fredericksburg, known as "Granddaddy of the Fair," died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000. Mr Rowell served at the helm of the Fredericksburg Agricultural Fair for nearly five decades before retiring in 1995 at age 80. He was a key player in the fair during the 1940s, after the area had gone without the yearly event for 16 years. "He's put his heart and soul into [the fair] and it's been a major portion of his life, " R. Duval Dickinson, who succeeded Rowell as fair president, said in 1995. He also worked as a manager at C & P Telephone and an executive at General Products. Mr. Rowell was a member of the Fredericksburg Rotary Club and the Dominion Club of Fredericksburg. Survivors include three daughters, Frances Gardner Rowell of Springfield, Patricia Rowell Rucker of Fredericksburg and Tama Rowell Taylor of Roanoke; two sisters, Harriett Robinson of Gastonia, N.C., and Janie Archibald of La Mesa, Calif.; a brother, Claude Rowell of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was the widower of Frances Carpenter Rowell. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Clore~English Funeral Home in Culpeper, with the Rev. Charles Syndor officiating.
