About John Allen Rowley

Son of Joel Russell Rowley and Sarah "Sallie" Allen. Husband of Nancy Ann Richardson.

John A. Rowley is the son of Joel Rowley, who emigrated from the state of Missouri to Pike county, Illinois, and settled on section 31, in Martinsburg township. There he remained until 1868, when he died, at the advanced age of eighty years. John A. Was born in St. Clair county, Missouri, in the year 1814, and came with his father to Illinois, remaining at home until about 1835, when he went to the Dubuque lead mines, where he remained thirteen months. Having been successful in saving some money, he returned to Pike county at the end of that time, and purchased eighty acres of land on section 31, and went to work to make himself a farm. In 1838 he was married to Miss Nancy Ann Richardson, and settled on his land, where he has resided ever since. He has been reasonably successful in farming and raising stock. His land being in the timber, it requires a great amount of labor to place it in a state of cultivation; consequently Mr. Rowley has done a great deal of hard, heavy work. He has met with several heavy reverses by reason of having endorsed for person in whom he had confidence, but who, proving unworthy, have left him to pay their debts. At an early ago Mr. Rowley joined the church, and he has lived a consistent Christian for the last twenty-five years. He was Bible agent for his district for several years, and discharged the duties to the satisfaction of all. He has had born to him sixteen children - fourteen boys and two girls - nine of whom have deceased; seven are living - three married and four at home, single. Mr. Rowley is a man who is highly respected by his neighbors for his many good qualities.
