About John Ruddick

Was he a brother of Jane Goodenow?

Biography

Jane Goodenow was not the daughter of John Ruddick. It appears that John Rudduck/Ruddick of early Marlborough didn't have any children. He m. 1st Dorothy Goodenow; 2nd. Jane Brimsmead and 3rd Rebecca unknown. His Will is written in very tiny handwriting but I'm unable to find mention of children although he mentions his 3rd wf. Rebecca and his male "kinfolk".

An estimate for John's birth is being used at this time and it's based upon the birth year of his 1st wife Dorothy Goodenow.

John "Ruddocke" was born in Wiltshire, England and died on 29 Jan 1693 in Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [1].

His name is spelled variously as Ruddyk, Rudduk, Ruddick, Ruddock, Rudducke.

John arrived during the Puritan Great Migration 1st wave and was made freeman in 1640. He was one of the original proprietors of Marlborough and he held office in various town positions for many years. For example, in 1641 he was named town clerk, an office he held for more than twelve years, while he and his brother-in-law Thomas Goodenow were among the town selectmen. John was later deacon of the church. [1]

John Ruddock married 3 times, the 1st being Dorothy [Goodenow] being his first wife. [1] She died 9 May 1686. He is named in his brother-in-law Thomas Goodenow's Will [Hudson, pg.372.]

John married 2nd on 30 Dec 1686, Jane Brimsmead, a sister of his clergyman (William Brimsmead) who d. 9 Feb 1688. [1] [2] Jane (Brimsmead) Rudduck died 9 Feb 1687/8.

John married 3rd Rebecca _____ on 28 Jan 1692/3, Marlborough, [3] and who died his widow 25 Dec 1694.[1] Rebecca died in 1694.

"The town of Sudbury, of which Marlborough was an offshoot, was granted as early as 1638 to Messrs. Pendleton, Noyse, Brown and Company and was incorporated the following year. Marlborough twp. was situated about 8 miles westward from Sudbury; it was petitioned for creation, by leading townsmen, to the General Court in May 1656 . [1]

In his Will, "John Rudduk" doesn't appear to mention any children nor does he mention his Goodenow relations. He does leave property to wife "Rebecka Rudduk" and "kinfolk" John Brimsmead, John Banistor and Joseph Banistor. He made John Banistor the executor. [4]

in ship "Confidence"||Massachusetts Bay Colony||

Alfred Sereno Hudson, The History of Sudbury, CONFIDENCE passenger list gives John's age as 42, Edmund's as 27, and Thomas' as 30. This would indicate birth dates of 1596, 1611 and 1608, respectively. Their sister Dorothy was married to John Ruddick, also a passenger on the "Confidence". Thomas' wife was Jane Ruddock or Ruddick [?] . It seems quite probable that John and Jane could have been brother and sister, or perhaps cousins. Edmund died April 16, 1688; Dorothy, May 9, 1686; John, March 28, 1654 (LDS); and Thomas, 1666. He was a Freeman and in 1644 became a selectman.
