John and Margaret always said they were born in Virginia, but a late life census record stated that he was born in Kentucky. So he must have been born in one of the counties of Virginia that is now part of Kentucky.
I am fairly certain that John was married prior to Margaret Garrett Fry Rutherford and that he had other children, as did Margaret have at least one son with Phillip Fry. I believe that Margaret's son stayed with the Fry family in Carrollton.
In the 1820 census for Calhoun County, Illinois there are two John Rutherfords. In the 1830 census there are three.
The question is, Is John the son of John, Larken or Robert? All are found in Illinois. DNA seems to indicate he may be the son of Reuben.
