John P. Rutherfurd was the son of New York social figure Winthrop Rutherfurd (1862-1944) and Alice Morton Rutherfurd (1879-1917). His father Winthrop Rutherfurd was the son of Lewis Morris Rutherfurd (1816-1892)(known astronomer, scientist, and inventory) and Margaret Chanler Stuyvesant Rutherfurd (the niece and adopted daughter of Peter Stuyvesant and Helena Rutherfurd Stuyvesant).His mother, Alice Morton Rutherfurd was the fourth daughter of Levi P. Morton(1824-1920)and Anna Livingston Street. Levi P. Morton was the U.S. Vice President under U.S. President Benjamin Harrison from 1889-1893 and Governor of New York from 1895-1897.

Winthrop and Alice had six children: Winthrop(1904-1988), John P.(1910-1987), Hugo(1911-2006), Guy, Lewis Morton (1903-1920) died at the age of 16, and a daughter Alice Rutherfurd. The Rutherfurd estates were in Allamuchy, New Jersey and Aiken, South Carolina.

John P. Rutherfurd was a 1932 graduate of Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey. He married Elizabeth Shevlin daughter of Thomas L and Alice A Shevlin. She died in 1957. His second marriage was to Jacqueline Orr (1923-2004) the accomplished artist and author. Her paintings were represented by Wally Finlay Gallery, New York, New York. She was the author of the children's book "You Can't Judge a Book by it's Cover" illustrated by her sister-in-law, Patricia Orr. Their daughter was Mary Michele Rutherfurd of Miami, FL. They were also the grandparents of Eric Rutherfurd, Ian Rutherfurd, Walker Rutherfurd, John Whitney Rutherfurd and Annan Rutherfurd.

Requests were made by the family for a tree and park bench to be placed in Central Park for both John P. and Jacqueline Orr Rutherfurd.

He was buried in Tranquility Cemetery in the Rutherfurd family plot, Tranquility, New Jersey near the family's estate built on Allamuchy Farms. Both Elizabeth Shevlin Rutherfurd and Jacqueline Orr Rutherfurd were buried next to him.
