About John Saunders

Aged 64y 3d

SS Della & Mary

John was born February 24, 1836 in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, Scotland. After schooling he took up the trade of a tinsmith and was probably apprenticed to his brother James Saunders. In 1852 he came to Canada with his parents & siblings to Hamilton, Ontario. He worked at his trade there until 1854 when he went to United States probably to Keithsburg, Illinois along with his sister Betsy and her husband James Duncan Seaton.

At a later date around 1865 John was in business with his brother James in Goderich, Ontario, Canada until he returned to USA.

John travelled about the American West in wagon trains working at his trade along the way. One story has it that on one of these travels he went with the Mormons to Salt Lake City, Utah and helped them build the Mormon Tabernacle. These wagon trains went as far as California - after one of these trips he returned home by going south by boat around the south of South America and up the east coast of the Americas and then overland to Illinois. Information from Alex Saunders Martin

On 17 May 1869 John declared his intention to become a US citizen and on 15 August 1872 was naturalized as a US citizen in Aledo, Mercer County, Illinois.

On February 16, 1871, John married Mary Rebecca Fleming in Keithsburg, Illinois where they were residents at the time. About 1874 or 1875 they moved west to Grant Township, Adams County, Iowa to land described as about 5 miles north and 2 miles east of Lenox, Iowa not far from Stringtown. Records show they bought the 160 acre farm from Manessa & Osra Edwards on 30 September 1874.

John died at their farm home February 27, 1900 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Taylor County, Lenox, Iowa. Note: Photo taken about 1893-94 is of John Saunders with his family in Iowa.
