About John Pontius Shoemaker
John P. Shoemaker grew up on farm 3 miles West of Geneva, Indiana and took advantage of the public schools. He lives at home until age 21, and soon after was married with a home of his own. They rented in Jay County for 7 years, then moved back to Harford Township and bought 80 acres of land.
John owned three farms in addition to his home in Geneva. There were ten children born to John and Ellen Shoemaker, four who died as children. These four children are buried beside their parents in the Hartford Cemetery, .6 miles east of Perryville on Hwy 116.
