John Bowen Shope

Centre Democrat, Thursday, 18 July 1938 John B. Shope, 82, one of the best known residents of Monument, died about noon Monday after being ill for some time with complications. He was born in Milesburg but had resided in Monument for a great many years. He had been teacher of a Sunday school class since the organization of the Church of Christ Sunday School. He was retired. Besides his second wife Ellen Jane, he is survived by 18 children. They are Mrs. Estella Hazel, Mrs. Gertrude Steffen and Clyde Shope of Williamsport; Mrs. Grace Walker, Lanse; John Shope, Mill Hall; George of Binghamton, NY; Mrs. Irene Brooks and Glen of Elmira, NY; Fount, of New Rochelle, NY; Mrs. Iva Martin, Charleston, SC, and Boyd Shope of Mapes, PA; David, of Salona; Floyd of Mill Hall; Mrs. Elizabeth Mayor, Milesboro, and Mrs. Nancy Hockenberg, Raymond, and Theodore Shope, and Mrs. Rose Mayes of Monument. Mrs. William Murray of Williamsport, a sister, and three brothers, F.L. of Bellefonte, W.S. of Clarksburg, and Harry Shope, of Altoona, also survive, with 42 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ, Monument, Thursday at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Robert J. DeBoer officiating. Burial will be made at Gillentown.
