John Sinclair is the son of Magnus Sinclair of Tohop. He married Marie Stewart, cousin of Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney. On 21 October 1584 Earl Robert gave Marie Stewart the lands of Braebuster, Havell and Swartebreck which had fallen to him by the escheat of Magnus Sinclair of Tohop, her father-in-law.
