About John Earle Skillman, Jr.

John was raised in Montclair, NJ, the son of a dentist and the oldest of three brothers (a fourth brother died at age one). He was graduated in 1929 from Montclair Academy. Following graduation, he went to work for Twentieth Century Fox. While marketing films in Virginia, he met Nellie Ruth Webber in Salem, VA, and they were married on 9 April 1936. They lived in Roanoke, VA, for two years and, after a year in Harrisburg, PA, settled in Upper Monclair, NJ, where they remained until John's death.

John suffered from asthma and was excused from military service in World War II. During the war, he served his community as a Civil Defense member and he was a welder at the Curtiss-Wright airplane propeller plant. Following World War II, John began a long career in wholesale electronics sales, covering northern NJ for several different companies. Following his second heart attack, he took his doctor's advice to stop traveling and he joined a local bank, working his way to branch manager. He retired for health reasons from Livingston (NJ) National Bank in May of 1968.

John earned his wings as a private pilot in 1935. He was Worshipful Master of Montclair Lodge #144, F&AM, in 1953. He was also a member of Montclair Chapter #34, Royal Arch Masons, and President of the Essex County Past Masters Association.
