JOHN SLATER write-up in the 1902 book A Biographical Record of Boone County Iowa:
With the industrial interests of Moingona John Slater is identified, being successfully engaged in the manufacture of brick in the village of which he is a very prominent citizen. More than a third of a century has passed since he came to Boone county, for he took up his abode within its borders on the 1st day of January, 1866, when there were only two other men living in Moingona. Mr. Slater was the first man to engage in the manufacture of brick in this county, and throughout the intervening years he has carried on his business in an honorable, straightforward manner, winning a good living and gaining the respect and confidence of those with whom he is associated. Mr. Slater is a native of England, his birth having occurred in Cumberland county, on the 17th of April, 1832. He is a son of Thomas and Mary (Mark) Slater, both of whom were natives of England. In 1850 the father came to America, bringing with him his family, and later settled in Keokuk, Iowa.

After the death of his first wife, Nancy Hammer, John Slater wedded Mrs. Louisa Battin, but she also passed away and he now boards with his daughter, Mrs. Boone. (Editor: Louisa, 1826-1893, also is buried in Quincy Cemetery, Boone County, Ia. Also, “Mrs. Boone” must be a reference to Mary, since John and Nancy had only one daughter. There is a Mary Boone, 1862-1956, in Quincy Cemetery. The 1900 census shows John Slater living with daughter Mary Boone & her husband William and children.)

In his political views Mr. Slater is a Republican and has always voted for the men and measures of that party. He has served as justice of the peace of Moingona for some time, discharging his duties with absolute fairness. he belongs to the Methodist Episcopal church of this place and is a representative citizen, deeply interested in everything pertaining to the progress and improvement of the county along lines of material, social or moral upbuilding. he has been a witness of the changes that have occurred in this county for a long period and his enterprise has been a potent factor in Moingona's development.

Children of NANCY HAMMER and JOHN SLATER are:
i. THOMAS MARK SLATER, b. Nov. 3, 1856, d. May 22, 1891. Burial Quincy Cemetery, Boone Co., Ia.
ii. HENRY SETH SLATER, b. April 4, 1858, d. March 4, 1895. Burial Quincy Cemetery, Boone Co., Ia.
iii. JOHN FRANCIS SLATER, b. 1862.
iv. MARY ELIZABETH SLATER, b. 1864 Iowa, d. 1956 Iowa. Burial Quincy Cemetery, Boone Co., Ia.
v. CURTIS ELLSWORTH SLATER, d. Bef. 1917.
vi. WILLIAM SLATER, d. Bef. 1917.

Nancy Hammer Slater died in 1870 at age 36, so if Curtis and William are her sons and not the sons of John's second wife Louisa, then they were born between 1864 and 1870. But Curtis and William are not listed in the following 1870 census.

The following 1870 census seems to be our John. The birth years are right for him and sons Thomas and Henry. Nancy is not listed because she died in February of that year. But where are their other children and who are the Smiths? Hired hands? The eldest Smith is the same age as John.

The above listing is at the very bottom of that census page. The top of the next page shows the family of John's daughter and her husband William Boone. William, too, is listed as head of household, but since he immediately follows father-in-law John in the listing, I infer the old widower is living with them (or perhaps right next door to them).
