Since his father William Smart embarked in 1635 from Gravesend, England for Virginia aboard the Thomas & John and since his son John Smart has been reported as being born in Lancaster Co, VA, he was probably born circa 1636..2 Marriage* before 12 July 1653 He married Tabitha [9] Scarburgh, daughter of Col. Edmund [3] Scarburgh (II) (Burgess) and Mary Cade (Cade?), before 12 July 1653 at Northampton Co, VA. Whitelaw shows she was age 14 at the time of her marriage to John Smart..3,4,5,6 Land rec'd as gift* 12 July 1653 John Smart received land as a gift on 12 July 1653 at tract N3, Magattey Bay, Northampton Co, VA. Edm. Scarburgh, merchant, freely give to John Smart (for my daughter Tabitha, now wife of John Smart) all the tract of land belonging to me at Maggattey Bay in Northampton County and livestock. Witt: Tho. Johnson, Tho. Teackle and John Dollinge. Whitelaw adds that this gift was made as a marriage portion for his daughter Tabitha, who was the wife of Smart.5,7 Death* before 29 August 1659 John died before 29 August 1659 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that William & Margaret Waters resold tract A23 to Devorax Browne, merchant, who had married Tabitha (Scarburgh) Smart, widow of John Smart.
