John Madison Spurlock

Obituary - Died on Thursday, 23rd January, Uncle Johnny Spurlock..He was born in Lee County, Virginia, Jan. 26, 1811, and lived there until he was sixteen years old. He then went to Taswell, Tenn., and from there he went to Knox County, Ky., where he married Sarah Ann Mason, his widow. He then moved to Indiana, and from there he came to Douglas County in 1843, and he has lived here ever since. He was three times elected county judge of this county, and made an excellent officer... He joined the United States service in the first call for volunteers and afterwards joined the 46th Mo. Infantry, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war... His remains were interred in the cemetery on Whites Creek, on Friday, 24 January. [Douglas County Herald, 30 Jan 1890]

”Unfortunately it does not appear ANYONE can find the parents of this man. We know of three brothers (almost certain)and cannot find parents. Oddly there are about ten Spurlocks born around the Cumberland Gap ca 1800 for whom the parents are unknown. There are several weird stories, theories, traditions, etc. but no proof ...”
