John Henry Stone & Mary Harris

John Henry Stone was the seventh born son of George and Mary Stone, born around 1821- he died in September of 1896. Mary Harris, daughter of James Harris Jr and Charlotte (Beaver) Langley, died June 30, 1918 in Arichat at 96 years of age, she was living with the family of her grandson Jack Larr at the time. She had been living with James and Mary Ann's son George Henry after the death of Mary Ann, from TB, believed to be somewhere between 1905 & 1906. It is said that most of her sons were indifferent to her in her final years. She was tall, stooped and spoke with a heavy Scottish brogue right up til the time of her death.

George is listed in 1905 as born in and still residing in St Peters - he is a seaman - his parents are down as George & Jennie - and his father is listed as a Ship's Carpenter - he is listed as a bachelor - Christie a widow - maiden name MacLellan - from Louisbourg. In 1891, at census time, there is a George Stone living with the Lawrence family in L'Ardoise. He is listed as being born at Salmon River (Barra Head) in 1877. He is down as the adpoted son of Julique Lawrence, a sister to Virgine (Jennie) Lawrence.

In 1953, a death record is at the Public Archives for a George Stone in Sydney, age 77, which would put his birth at about 1877 or 78. HIs parents are listed as George Stone and Vircine Lawrence, by his daughter Mary Stone, who is the informant. They are just listed as being from Nova Scotia...After the St Peter's Canal opened in 1869, George Henry Stone, a carpenter, went to sea for a period of about 8 years, returning about 1877 or 1878, at which point he is in Halifax and eventually weds Elizabeth Donovan of Ingonish. He never returns to Lynche's River. It isn't too hard to piece all these events together and come up with the scenario presented here, that this George Henry Stone born in 1877 and wed in 1905 is likely the son of George Henry Stone, grandson of John Henry Stone and Mary Harris...

Married Andrew Parker (Port Hood) Aug 30, 1877, who was lost at sea in 1880 after being adrift for 45 days in a storm. He worked aboard George ( married Mary Ann Stone - Maurice & Mary) Nickerson's schooner at the time. In 1881 she is living in Halifax with other "seafaring" people from around St Peter's, John St John & his wife, James Kavanagh and her two year old son John Parker...That is the last trace of her to date.
