About John ‘the miller’ Stull, Sr.

John Stull “the miller” was probably born between 1690-1700, and probably in one of the German countries. He died between August 16, 1749 (the date of the Will on file preceding his) and October 25, 1749 (the date of the next Will after John's, which just happens to be that of his son Daniel).

John's estate was located about a mile southeast of Hagerstown at what was known as Millsborough.

This John Stull and Captain John Adam Stull are two different people. John Adam Stull was born October 10, 1763 and died March 11, 1844. He was the son of Christopher Stull and Philippina Staley. He was a Captain in the War of 1812. Christopher Stull was the son of Adam and Barbara Stull.

  • From the records of Chris H. Bailey of Bristol Connecticut: John Stull, Sr., "The Miller". He was supposedly a German by birth and must have come to this couantry prior to 1730. Tradition says he was first in Philadelphia. (Note: There are some doubts about John's German nativity. It is supposed that he was not born in Germany but in this country). By 1733 he had settled on Antietam Creek, Prince George's County, Maryland and was taxed on on "Mancaise Hundred." This area was to become Frederick County in 1748 and Washington County in 1776.
  • From John Stull Family Search Page. This man is a NOT named "John Adam Stull", there is no "Adam" in this man's name. There has been much confusion over this that has unfortunately made it into many people's family trees unchecked. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LKBS-T1H
