John Tomes was born in about 1569. Son of John Tomes and Alice (Harburne) Holtom
In about 1586 he married Ellen Gonne of Saintbury. It is believed that she was the mother of his children Alice, Mary, Anne and Joan.
On 3 Aug 1601 he married Ann Warner. Their marriage took place at Wormington, Gloucestershire, England. Soon after, a son John, was born. [1]
John wrote his will on 21 May 1682. He died on the 25 May 1602. [2]His will was probated on 23 Nov 1602. [3]
In his will he made bequests to:
- daughter Ann Tomes
- unborn child of my wife Ann
- other daughters Joan and Alice
- Mary Kecke, the daughter of my son William Kecke
- children of my sister Alice Kecke
- brother William Holtham
- children of my brother Thomas Holtham
- sister Joan Harrington
- wife Ann
- Thomas Harrington and Thomas Kecke overseers.
Ellen Gunne was first married to Joseph Phelps of Bengeworth. When he died in Nov 1579 [1] she was his executrix. [2] According to the same source there were several children from this marriage. [3]
After Joseph's death, Ellen married John Tomes of Long Marston. She died before 1601, when John took a second wife, Anne Warner.
John Tomes and Ellen Gunne were married about 1586. Their children were born in Marston Sicca, Gloucestershire, which is now Long Marston, Warwickshire.
