The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private John Mitchell Vanderslice, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 6 February 1865, while serving with Company D, 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry, in action at Hatcher's Run, Virginia. Private Vanderslice was the first man to reach the enemy's rifle pits, which were taken in the charge.
