About John Phillip Wallace

John Phillip Wallace. He was a farmer. The 1924 death certificate of his daughter Almeda says that he was born in Toronto, but his baptism record confirms that he was born in Dundas County, Ontario.

There is some uncertainty about his name. His baptism record calls him Philip, as does his 1870 marriage record. His 1849 marriage record and the marriage record of his daughter Embrosina give his name as John. The 1850, 1860 and 1880 censuses show him as Phillip. He is undoubtedly the same person. In 1850 he was at farmer at Troy in Delaware County, Ohio, living with his wife Almeda, but no children. They were living next door to his parents.

In 1853 he moved to Richland County, Wisconsin, and in September 1854 bought land in Richland County from Garwood Greene. In 1855 he was in Shields, Dodge County, Wisconsin with four males and two females in his household. In 1858 he bought 9 acres in Richland County from John and Eliza J. Wallace (Northwest one- quarter of the Northwest one-quarter, Section 12, Township 9 North Range 2 East) (Deed Bk. K:250). On 1 June 1858 he 80 acres from the federal government (Southwest one-quarter of the Northwest one-quarter and Northeast one-quarter of the Southwest one-quarter, Section 12, Township 9 North, Range 2 East).

In 1860 he was living at Buena Vista in Richland County. He was a farmer, with $100 in personal property. That same year, he bought land from Frederick Sweetson (Deed Bk. 2:342). For research purposes, he must be distinguished from the Phillip Wallace who was enumerated on the same census at Shields, Dodge County, Wisconsin (p. 862).

A biography of his son-in-law Richard Trenhaile says Phillip and Almeda moved to Iowa in 1867, and Almeda died in Marion County in 1868. They had seven children, but I have only identified five.

Phillip married Sarah Hicks in Marion County in 1870. The 1870 census shows him in Marion County, Iowa, where he was a farmer with $500 in personal property and recently married (the census says in May; the marriage record says April). A W. Sudansmeyer, blacksmith, age 21, born in Russia, was living in his household.

The same biography of Richard Trenhaile says Phillip Wallace settled in Dodge County, Nebraska, in 1875." In 1880 he was living at Cedar in Saunders County, Nebraska. He died in 1883, probably at Creston, where he is buried.

In 1885 his wife Sarah appears in the household of his son Osni. The census says he was still living, but he was not.

Some sources say he married Cordelia (Bekemans 1984), but I have found no record of her.
