Golden Anniversary- Mr. and Mrs. John Washington of Prichard, AL., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary yesterday with a reception at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Hosting the reception were their children, Mrs. Freemont Moore and Herman Washington of Prichard; Mrs. J.D. Holcomb of Gary, ID., and Mrs. Melvin Kennedy and Mrs. Harold White of Washington, D.C. The couple has 29 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Washington were married Feb. 6, 1927 in Calvert, Ala.

Deacon John Washington Jr., beloved son of Missoria and John Washington Sr., was born March 12, 1905 in Calvert, Alabama. He confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized by Rev. Parker. Growing in grace and wisdom, he was ordained as a Deacon in 1926 and served faithfully and dutifully in that capacity for 54 years. He served as President of the Laymen and any other areas of the church whenever and wherever duty called. He departed this life October 15, 1980. Leaving to cherish his memory are a loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Geneva Washington; one son and devoted friend, Herman (Elnora) Washington; four daughters and sons-in-laws, Deacon Fremont (Dorothy) Moore of Prichard; Rev. J.D. (Esther) Holcombe of Gary, Indiana; Deacon Melvin (Delores) Washington of Washington D.C.; Frank (Vonciel) Barrows of New Bedford, Massachusetts; one godson, John Bolar, Germany; 37 grandchildren,31 great-grandchildren; two brothers and one sister-in-law, George (Ruth) Washington of Calvert; Will Washington of Mobile; three sisters, Annie Brown of Maryland, Catherine Munnerlyn of Califormia, Mary Griffin of Prichard; four sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law, Richard (Annice) Bias and Fannie Gordon of California, Ruth Knott of Michigan, Leo (Sadie) Gradford of Prichard, Rev. Clarence (Mittie)Knight of Mobile; a host of devoted nieces, nephews, other relatives and very close friends. |
