John and Sarah (Jones) Weekley were from Beaufort County, South Carolina and came to Baldwin County, Alabama with families, obtaining land in the Tensaw area prior to 1790. During the American Revolution, he was a military commander under Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox." The family gained passports and permission to enter the Creek Nation lands of the Mississippi Territory
John E. Weekley was a land surveyor. He assisted grantees in identifying their land prior to the work of Colonel Andrew Ellicott in establishing the survey line of the 31st parallel. He knew that incoming settlers would need surveying and lots of it. He had three capable sons to help him as they knew the work of the surveyor.
