Origin notes

From The genealogical and encyclopedic history of the Wheeler ..., Page 1, Issue 594 By Albert Gallatin Wheeler, American College of Genealogy

Individuals of the name of Wheeler appear in Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut and Pennsylvania as early as 1629 in some places, and in considerable numbers during the next five years in all the others except Pennsylvania.

The Concord settlers came from Odell, Bedfordshire, twelve families according to Walcott embarking at London May 9, 1635, in the ship "Susan and Ellen" under the leadership of Rev. Peter Bulkeley, and later with the Rev. John Jones in the ship Defiance, landing Oct. 3, 1635.

The Rev. Mr. Bulkeley came from Odell in the Hundred of Willy, County of Bedford, England, where he was rector 1623-1629. He was suspected of Puritanism and suspended for nonattendance at the Visitation of Aug. 26, 1634. He confessed that he never used the surplice nor cross in baptisms. He was to appear before the High Commissioner on the first court day in November, " if he reformed not before."

Whether or not any of the Wheelers came at the same time as the Rev. Peter Bulkeley is a matter of conjecture, although the name is to be met with in every shire in England. It is absolutely certain that a number of them came from Wiltshire and Bedfordshire, and events show the close relationship between some of them and Mr. Bulkeley in America. It is presumable that this connection had existed prior to their emigration, but the evidence seems to point against the most prominent of them having come at that time. Indeed this evidence seems conclusive, for, as will be seen by a petition that appears elsewhere in this book, under date of Sept. 7, 1643, certain of them say, "Whereas your humble petitioners came into this country about four years agoe, and have since then lived at Concord—," which would indicate the time of their arrival as 1638-9. This would imply that these latter had followed at a later date taking time to dispose of property in England and to make the other preparations that would be necessary to people of substance with important affairs to administer.

Research has revealed there were three (3) Thomas Wheeler’s of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England. There is one of “Bourne End”, one of “Wharley End” and one of “Town End” (also known as Austen Allen Close) in this time period (reference F. G. Emmison’s Bedfordshire Parish Registers, Cranfield). This Thomas Wheeler (my ancestor) is of Town End.
