John Alexander Williams
was born in Nicholas County; the son of Samuel Fowler and Elizabeth
Mary (Bailes) Williams.
Samuel was a soldier in the Civil War. He is buried in the Wood Cemetery on Pisgah Mountain about five miles from the city of Clay. Mary is buried beside him but has no marker.
John was fatally injured at the Warner Block Coal Company tipple at 2:14 P. M. Wednesday, Aug. 25. He was put on a hand car in order to be transported down Coal River to a hospital in Kanawha County. He died near McCorkle before reaching the hospital. His son-in-law, Whitman Romie "Peg" Hill, was with him. John was a minister in the Baptist Church. On his headstone was placed: HE DIED AS HE LIVED _ A CHRISTIAN
