John's parents are uncertain. His father is not (as often claimed) Robert Winter, son of Roger Winter and Elizabeth Hungerford, because that Robert Winter was born about 1520 according to information given in the Visitations of Gloucestershire.

1526 -- John Winter and Alice Tirry married at Llandorff, Glamorganshire, Wales. Alice Tirry (Tyrry, Terry) was a daughter of William Tirry or Terry of County Cork, Ireland. John and Alice had 11 children named in his will dated 1545. [3]

The testator [William Winter] was the second son of John Winter (d.1545) of Bristol and Deptford, a merchant and sea captain, by Alice Tirrey, the daughter and heir of William Tirrey of Cork.
