About John James Winters

ohn James WINTERS was born Abt 1797 in Pittsylvania Co.,VA but was raised in Burke County, NC.

He was the son of William WINTERS and Mary BELEW.

Nancy Jane DANIELS was born Abt 1792 in Wilkes County,North Carolina. She married John about 1814.

John and Nancy Winters lived in Burke County with their young children until about 1828 when they moved their family to Carter County, TN. We believe that the Winters had 9 children with birthdays between 1815 to 1833.

They lived and raised their family in the Roan Mountain area of Carter County and were found in the 1850 Carter County census with two grandchildren living with them.

1850 is the last record we have of Nancy Daniels Winters and we believe she died and was buried in Carter County sometime between 1850 and 1860.

We have been unable to discover her gravesite but believe she is most likely buried in an unmarked grave in the Alfred Johnson Cemetery in Roan Mountain. This is where the Winters family were living during the time of Nancy's death and in the 1850 census they were living next door (near by) Sarah Winters and Alfred Johnson, Sarah being John and Nancy's oldest daughter.

In the 1860 Carter County Census, John was living with his youngest daughter, Nancy, who was probably a care-giver as John would have been in his mid-sixties.

After the Civil War, John and his daughter moved to Caldwell County, NC. They are found in the 1870 Census there. John died sometime between 1870 and 1880 and was buried at his home place.
