Service Description: 1) BATTLE OF POINT PLEASANT

John wrote his will in Bedford County, Va., in 1776. He named his wife Agnes, whose maiden name was probably Griffith, and the following children: John Jr., Winifred, Milly, Elizabeth, Rachel, Agnes, Richard, Elijah and Henry. He fought with the Virginia pioneers against the Indians led by Chief Cornstalk at Point Pleasant, in Oct. 1774. They won peace with the Indians. Researches say that is why we won the Revolutions. We could not have fought the Indians on the Western border and British on Eastern border and been successful. Following this battle, he participated in Capt. Rowlands company in the Cherokee expedition in Tennessee. He helped lay out Jonesboro, Tn,. in 1779 and received lots #42, #51. On May 5, 1778 he purchased land from Jacob Brown on the south side of the Nolachuky River. While gathering maple sap in the woods, he was killed by an Indian. His will was probated in May 1780 in Washington County Tn. (then North Caroline).
