ensign for maryland militia in revolutionary war/in 1810 he and his neighbors built fort wood on his farm the first fort built in that vicinity his grave is located near friendsville wabash co illinois and is marked with a us marker placed by the military service april 27 1779 ensign with the 37th battalion of militia of the maryland line
John was born in Frederick county, Maryland, 27 Nov 1754. He was a soldier in the American Revolution. ON 05 Dec 1781 he married his first wife in Frederick county. she, the daughter Colonel Alexander Ogle, was born in 1761 and died in 1820. In 1783 Alexander Ogle died and left his daughter, Martha Wood, 200 acres in Berkeley County, Virginia. After living there for ten years, they sold out and returned to Frederick County, Maryland. A short time later they moved to Kentucky in 1798 to settle in Barren County, where they lived until 1808. They then moved to Wabash County, Illinois, where John constructed a fort, called Wood's Fort. He died 14 Nov 1832 and was buried near his first wife Martha in the old Wood Cemetery not far from Friendsville, Illinois. His stone reads: John Woods, Ensign, Maryland Militia.
