About John Wood

I just started using the World Family Tree CD's, vol.'s 1-5 and noticed the same error repeated in several Woods family trees. The error is the listing of Michael Woods 684-1762, the son of John Woods and Elizabeth _Worsop_ of Northern Ireland. In the 1970's and 80's several researchers examined Irish records.

One of the best descriptions of one such effort is in "Woods-Wallace Cousin Clues" by Ruth Lamar Petracek. Elizabeth Worsop was married to _a_ John Wood (no"s") and was his second wife, but not the ancestor of the Borden Grant, Virginia Woods. Elizabeth Worsop is proven to have had _NO_ children. (Public Records office, Belfast, Ireland, T 559, Vol. 42, p. 148)

Note: "was NOT the husband of Elizabeth Warsop: she married a different John WOOD (no 's') as his 2nd wife and may have had no children." See Major Error in Michael Woods Trees

John was a cousin of his wife, Elizabeth Woods.   The marriage was said to have been arranged between cousins to keep some prized lands and buildings in the family.  Elizabeth had inherited Dunshaughlin Castle from her father, Sir Thomas Woods.  John was a second son of his parents, and thus had little if any land that he was eligible to inherit.  The laws of primogeniture gave almost everything to the first born son.

Sir John Woods of Dunshaughlin Castle was the son or grandson of Sir John Woods of Yorkshire County, England who married Isabel Bruce and had come into Ireland with Cromwell.

This Woods family still has a branch in Ireland, descended from John and Elizabeth Woods(s)' first born son, that owns Milverton Hall at Skerries, on the coast north of Dublin. [1]
