John Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings (6 May 1262 – 28 February 1313) was an English peer and soldier of the Middle Ages. Hastings was a competitor for the Scottish throne in 1290/92 in the Great Cause.

Son of Henry de Hastings and Joan de Cantelou / Cantilupe, grandson of Sir Henry de Hastings and Ada of Huntingdon, William de Cauntelo and Eve de Braose.

Firstly, husband of Isabel de Valence, daughter of William de Valence, Earl of Pembroke. they were married in 1275 and had six children:

John Hastings was summoned to Parliament as Lord Hastings on 23 June 1295. He received the title of Baron Bergavenny at the death of his uncle, George de Cantilupe in 1273, and inherited Abergavenny Castle as well as the honor of Abergavenny. John participated in the wars of King Edward I in Scotland, Ireland and France, appointed to Seneschal of Aquitaine.

His attempt to claim the Scottish throne as the grandson of Ada, third daughter of David, Earl of Huntingdon who was the grandson of King David of Scotland was unsuccessful.

Sir John Hastings, 2nd Baron Hastings, Baron Abergavenny, Seneschal of Aquitaine married Isabel le Despenser, daughter of Sir Hugh le Despenser, Earl of Winchester, Constable of Devizes, Marlborough, Odiham, St. Briavel's, & Striguil Castles and Isabel de Beauchamp, circa 1308; They had 2 sons (Sir Hugh; & Thomas). Sir John Hastings, 2nd Baron Hastings, Baron Abergavenny, Seneschal of Aquitaine died on 10 February 1313 at age 50; Buried in Hastings Chapel, Church of the Friars Minor, Coventry, Warwickshire.
