About John de Meriet

  • John de Meriet was the son of George de Meriet and his wife Isobel. Sadly George died when his son was only a few weeks old, so John's birthdate is known to be late October 1328 [from the Inquisition Post Mortem held in 1328].
  • John married by 1245 to Eleanor Beauchamp & their son John de Meriet was born on the 4th May 1345/6 [established from his proof of being over 21 to claim his inheritance]
  • Eleanor [de Beauchamp] his wife had died by 1361 when her brother John de Beauchamp died, leaving as his heir [Inquisition Post Mortem] his sister Cecily [de Beauchamp] Seymour & John de Meriet, minor son of his deceased sister Eleanor. [Incidentally, this evidence refutes the other purported marriages for Eleanor]
  • By 1362, John has re-married to a wife named Matilda, as property deeds name her.
  • John de Meriot's Inquisition Post Portem establishes that he died in Calais, France on the 2nd October 1369, leaving a widow Matilda & son and heir John de Meriet.
