"Johne Witherspone was one of those who signed the 'Solemn League Covenant. (The Scottish covenators subscribed to [the covenant] to stand by each other in opposition to the religious and political measures of King Charles I in 1638. Before 1642 the 'Covenators' having increased in numbers and power, assumed entire direction of their own ecclesiastical affairs, and styled themselves Presbyterians."
